According to the U.S. Department of Transportation's vehicle classification system, class is based on GVWR, not on what you plan to load. That's why a 3/4 ton truck can have a payload capacity over 2,000 pounds in some trims and less in others.

For this conversation: a 3/4 ton truck is not a tow vehicle for a JCB 212S backhoe. The 212S is a multi-ton machine; you need a heavy-duty truck, a properly rated trailer, and the right registration and endorsements. A 3/4 ton truck is realistic for hauling a few attachments or a small compact loader, but if you're towing a backhoe, you're in 1-ton or larger territory.
