If you're looking at Sandvik mobile crushers, you've probably read the brochure specs and watched a few videos. This is the other side. 1. Is a Sandvik mobile crusher worth the premium price?

The honest answer: it depends on what you're doing. If you're renting one for a season to crush recycled concrete, a budget machine might make sense. A jaw crusher is the primary stage. It grabs big rocks and breaks them down to a size that conveyor belts and downstream equipment can handle. A cone crusher is a secondary or tertiary stage. It takes that pre-crushed feed and refines it into a consistent, sellable product.

I once set up a cone crusher as my primary unit on a job with 30-inch boulders. Put another way: I used a finishing tool for roughing work. The chamber clogged within the first hour. That cost me a week and about $8,000 in lost production before I put a jaw crusher ahead of it.

Some operations skip the jaw and go straight to an impact crusher, which works for softer or less abrasive feed. But for hard rock, a jaw is the right first stop.

3. Is a used Sandvik cone crusher for sale a worthwhile buy?

Used Sandvik cone crushers can be a solid purchase. I bought a used CH440 in 2021, and the machine itself was reliable. The problem was I didn't check the wear parts before committing. The liners were at about 40% of their useful life — a full replacement set cost me $28,000 that I hadn't budgeted for.

If you're considering a used cone crusher, ask for or inspect these things before signing anything:

  • Remaining wear life — liners, mantles, and bowl liners
  • Hydraulic system pressure test records
  • A main frame crack inspection, not just visible cracks
  • Oil sample history, not just a fresh sample taken at the viewing

I should add that the seller was happy to show me the machine itself. I skipped the paperwork review. That's where the maintenance records matter most.

4. Do I really need an air compressor on a crushing site?

Yes, but probably not for what you're thinking. You won't be running a jackhammer off it. You'll be blowing dust out of equipment air filters, inflating loader tires, and running the impact wrench when it's time to change crusher liners.

I keep a Milwaukee air compressor in the service truck. It's a portable M18 unit, which is fairly convenient, and it handles the majority of maintenance jobs. What it won't do is power industrial tools — if that's your plan, get a proper stationary compressor. But for day-to-day crusher upkeep, a compact portable unit works well.

5. What does a condensate pump have to do with my setup?

Every air compressor produces water, and that water ends up in the tank. A condensate pump's job is to automatically move that water from the compressor drain to a place where it can flow away. On a flat site with good drainage, you can open the drain valve manually and be fine. On many job sites, the compressor sits in a low spot with no gravity outlet.

I skipped this once. I had a compressor on a site where the tank rested below grade, and I drained it by hand through the winter. The water froze, cracked the tank, and forced a full replacement. That repair cost me $1,200 — the pump I should have bought was a fraction of that.

That was my 'I should know better' moment. Add it to the budget before you start running.

6. How do I drill into concrete without wrecking drill bits?

I'll tell you the mistake I made so you don't have to repeat it. My first attempt used a standard hammer drill with a regular bit. Six minutes of noise, smoke, and a hole about an inch deep. That bit went straight into the trash.

Use an SDS rotary hammer instead. SDS bits chip and rotate simultaneously, so they cut much faster and last far longer. I know that sounds basic, but that one swap cut my drilling time from minutes to seconds.

A few other things I've learned from wrecking more bits than I'd like to admit:

  • Check for rebar before drilling — a $15 detector is cheaper than a ruined $90 bit
  • Don't push hard — if the bit is turning blue, the tool is overheating from too much pressure
  • Pull the bit out periodically to clear concrete dust; it jams the flutes and slows everything down

Buying on horsepower instead of feed opening. Nobody seems to ask 'what size rock is actually going into this thing' until the machine arrives on site.

I watched it happen: a company bought a large mobile crusher without checking whether the feed opening matched their material. The oversize boulders had to be pre-broken with a hydraulic hammer, which added two weeks to the schedule and thousands in labor costs.

Before you buy anything, match these three numbers:

  • Feed opening size vs. the largest rock dimensions you'll actually load
  • Closed side setting vs. the product size you're contracted to deliver
  • Crushing capacity per hour vs. your real sales volume

There's no single best crusher. There's only the machine that fits your rock, your product, and your schedule. Getting that right will save you more than any warranty or discount.
